Athens Canine Rescue is holding its monthly Adoption Day from 10:30 a.m.- noon Saturday, July 23 at Pawtropolis, 130 Whitetail Way, Bogart. For more information, visit www.athenscaninerescue.com. (Hurray for ACR, including the lovely Allyson Mann, a volunteer, who — in this very long aside — came to help out one Saturday a few years back when my cousin and I found a dog who’d been painted for Halloween. The owner appeared after we’d been hanging out waiting with the dog for more than an hour for Allyson to get there and foregoing our place in line at this local restaurant where the owner was dining and paying no attention to his dog — a very sweet Pitbull. He came over and vehemently defended himself when Allyson was about to lead the dog away — it’s OK, apparently, to use acrylic paint and paint your entire dog’s coat — face and all — to make it look like a jack-o-lantern, at least that’s what the dog owner and the restaurant manager agreed (the dog owner actually said it was “funny” and that we didn’t have a sense of humor. While I won’t name that restaurant which stood by this jerk, I also no longer eat there. And by the way, the dog was miserable, rolling around in the grass and trying to work the paint off of herself. It also should be noted, this was about five days after Halloween. The owner went home with his dog, but I feel sure we at least made an impression.)
