Sound Tribe Sector 9 (which has some Athens roots and has played here many times and been a big supporter of the Ga. Theatre) announced earlier this year that bassist and all-around good guy David Murphy (an Atlanta native), above, has cancer and currently is undergoing treatment. (Read more here.) The band canceled the winter part of its tour but will be in Athens on Wednesday, April 20 and Thursday, April 21 for two shows at the Classic Center.
In addition, Terrapin Brewery will be hosting a concert pre-party to benefit Rock Against Cancer 5:30-7:30 p.m. April 20, featuring Noise[Org], from Auburn, Ala., a raffle to include tickets to STS9’s performances at the Classic Center and commemorative 16 oz. Terrapin Brewery glasses. The collectable glasses will feature artwork by local artist David Hale.
Rock Against Cancer (RAC) is a nonprofit organization providing innovative opportunities for children and teens with cancer to gain emotional support through music.  Rock Against Cancer’s programs provide children and families respite from long and painful cancer treatment while building public awareness and support for the youngest victims of cancer. Music is a source of healing and solace during long hours of chemotherapy infusions, painful procedures, in hospital rooms, and at home.
