Commentary on comments

As I noted last week, rather than having readers pay for online subscriptions to the paper, I think newspapers instead should charge readers to comment — per comment. It’s sorta like Chris Rock’s philosophy about bullet control — if readers have to pay 10 bucks to make a comment, chances are, they’ll put a little more thought into what they say. Then again, as Gawker notes (thanks Anne), I have little doubt that among most of us in the newspaper industry, the best idea would be to do away with them altogether. Comments? Kidding.
